Botulinum Toxin injections (Commonly known as “Botox”)

If you’re considering having Botulinum Toxin injections, there are important points to consider:

• You should only have Botulinum Toxin administered by a skilled, reputable medical practitioner with a proven track record for safety.
• Botulinum Toxin for injection is a prescription-only medicine, hence it is important that you are treated by someone who is qualified to prescribe such a medicine, and who has the medical skills to deal with any medical complications or effects from such treatments.
• That person should be experienced in achieving a look that is completely natural.
• You should never base your decision on price alone.

The doctor will ask you to frown and then relax to establish where to inject the Botulinum Toxin injection. The treatment involves a small series of injections using a very fine needle. The process is relatively painless and takes around 10 minutes. Results are visible within two to fourteen days, lasting for three to four months. Subsequent treatments can last much longer. The duration of effect varies from patient to patient and may be less effective for those over 65 years of age.

Most patients would look slightly pink in the areas where the injections have been administered. Some may experience a slight temporary bruising at the injection site. These are easily covered with make-up.

Frown lines, crow’s feet and the wrinkles at the top of the nose will be noticeably smoother. Lots of people worry that they are going to look unnatural but it’s a myth that Botulinum Toxin freezes all facial expression. Botulinum Toxin injection is Food & Drug Administration (FDA) approved for the treatment of wrinkles and has been used medically in tiny safe doses for 20 years. It works by blocking impulses from the nerve to the tiny facial muscles that are related to expression lines and relaxes the muscles so they do not contract.

Botulinum Toxin injections can be used to treat all wrinkles which are the result of normal facial movement. When it is injected into a specific muscle in the face it blocks the signal from the nerve to the muscle. This causes the muscles to relax and to allow the skin to heal and for the line to smooth away. Only minute quantities of Botulinum Toxin are injected. Only the injected muscle will be affected.

Temporary bruising is the most common side effect of Botulinum Toxin. In some cases, the toxin can migrate and cause a temporary weakness of nearby muscles. In rare cases, there can be a drooping of an eyelid or asymmetry of facial expression. The risk of any side effect depends on the muscles injected. Your doctor will discuss this with you in length before your treatment.

Botulinum Toxin injection is also used to treat Hyperhydrosis (Excessive Sweating) and to help alleviate the symptoms of migraine. Botulinum Toxin injection may also be used in conjunction with other non-surgical treatments such as skin peels and dermal fillers.

Botulinum Toxin injections are ideal for dynamic wrinkles such as frown lines, crow’s feet and wrinkles at the top of the nose, but it’s not the right solution for deeper furrows caused by sun-damage or sagging skin. You may need a dermal filler, laser treatments, or other cosmetic treatments for this.
