Laser treatment for leg veins

You can have the laser vein removal in Cardiff at our surgical suite. We limit the treatment length to 20 minutes as it can get uncomfortable beyond that. The laser uses a focused beam of light. The wavelength of light is targeted to the pigment in the blood. The heated blood in turn heats up the small vein and damages it. The laser beam is selective and does not damage the nearby skin tissue. Over a period of four to six weeks, the vein is reabsorbed by the body and disappears. Some veins will require more than one treatment to be destroyed.

After the laser treatment the treated areas will have some redness and swelling, a bit like a hive or allergic reaction due to the histamine release. This generally disappears over the next 24 hours. With our laser, blistering or scarring and other complications are very rare. Normal activities can be resumed after the treatments (but avoid exercise or hot bath or sauna that can open/ dilate the blood vessels for one week). However, we advise you to stay mobile for a couple of hours post treatment. We also recommend the use of grade 2 compression stockings during the day for a few weeks following the treatment.

The results of laser treatment for thread veins and leg veins are not immediate. After the laser therapy, the vessels underneath the skin will gradually change from a dark blue to light red to brown and greyish colour, and eventually disappear in two to six weeks. The majority of leg veins will disappear within two to four weeks, but in some cases this may be longer or require several treatments before results can be seen.

This depends on the number of veins you want treated. Some patients only need one treatment while others may need many more. The treatment will last about 20 minutes each time. The treatments to the same area are done 4-6 weeks apart. Those with severe vascular problems will most likely require multiple treatments.

A medical consultation is carried out prior to laser therapy to make sure that you are suitable patient for this treatment. Even though spider veins are of a cosmetic concern only, however the effect can be most depressing. Laser therapy is most effective for the very small spider veins (less than 3 mm in diameter) and is not used to treat large varicose veins.
